Goa won the 63rd National Football Championship, for the Santosh Trophy, when they beat 29-time champions Bengal 4-2 via the tie-breaker at the Nehru Stadium, in Chennai.

After both the teams failed to find the back of the net even after extra-time, the final was decided via the penalty shoot-out.

Goa scored through Climax Lawrence, Bevan D’Mello, John Dias and Fulgancio Cardozo to emerge victorious, even though while Nicholas Rodrigues’s kick from the spot at the far post was saved by a diving Subhashis Roy Chowdhury.

Snehasish Chakraborthy and Lalwmpuia were on target for Bengal but Safar Sarkar and Lalkamal Bhowmick shot straight into the hands of Goa ‘keeper Felix D Souza.

This was the seventh time the teams met in the final of the tournament, Bengal winning it five times and both were joint-winners on one occasion.

It was another heart break for Bengal who last won the trophy for the 29th time 10 years ago while Goa regained the cup after a lapse of three years.
